Ecube Labs, based in Seoul, South Korea, is a leading provider of smart waste management solutions, including solar-powered compacting waste bins. Their smart bins and sensors are helping municipalities to make cities more livable by improving urban waste collection with data driven solutions.
Widget Brain, based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, will provide microservices to use the data generated by Ecube Labs’ products to better forecast fill rate levels, create optimized routes and re-optimize the operations during the day. The joint solution will help cities increase recycling rates, reduce collection costs and prevent bin overflow.
The joint technology is currently active in the old city of Seoul. Both parties expect to make their joint technology available in Asia, Europe, Australia and USA in the first half of 2017.

Roger Kim, COO of Ecube Labs: “With waste generation rapidly increasing across major cities worldwide, more and more municipalities are investing in smart waste management solutions to cope with rising demands of public service while maintaining fiscal discipline. With this partnership with Widget Brain, Ecube Labs can deliver greater value from waste-related data, resulting in higher demonstrable waste management savings and cleaner public areas for cities.”
Maarten de Boo, partner at Widget Brain: “The data flow from smart assets within smart cities will be used to help municipalities to create an intelligent and dynamic operation to keep the streets clean. Together with Ecube Labs we are implementing advanced forecasting algorithms to detect patterns in behaviour. For example, when it is raining, bins in pedestrian areas are filling up slower than normal.”
About Widget Brain
Widget Brain is passionate about creating smart solutions that have a real impact on daily life. Algorithms that lower CO2, improve recycling rates, save lives, deliver faster, prevent critical failures and decide autonomously.
We are ambitious in achieving our vision of the future. In that future we create a connected universe of things, capable of outperforming everything else in the analogue world in terms of superior service, lowest costs and compatibility with other smart things. We cover the whole of the digital ecosystem, including smarter cities, smarter factories and smarter supply chains.

You offer a platform that integrates all the separate data points of your assets into a single, presentable UI. No longer do your clients need to separately monitor each of their assets, saving them a considerable amount of time. But what if there was a way to up the value of your IoT platform even more? That way is called AI. Read more.
An algorithm might produce results quickly and accurately because it feels uncomfortable that we often don’t understand how it came to these results. They need to be carefully integrated which doesn’t just mean that it also needs to be accepted by the people who will work with it.
As labor laws impact the lives of employees, franchisors should actively encourage franchisees to comply with these laws. We'd argue that the franchisor should provide the scheduling tools to enable them to do so in order to protect the brand reputation among many other reasons. Learn more about how to ensure compliance.
